Why Your First 30 Seconds Matter

When pitching your startup, most investors or potential partners form an opinion in the first 7–10 seconds. It’s not impatience-it’s the speed at which clarity signals competence.

That’s why a well-crafted 30-second pitch can make the difference between being heard and being ignored. It forces you to:

Cut jargon and buzzwords.
Remove long-winded backstories.
Strip away unnecessary fluff.
Highlight what truly matters.

A great pitch isn’t about sounding intelligent-it’s about being clear, concise, and compelling.

What We’ve Learned at BAV

Across Africa, whether in Accra, Lagos, or Nairobi, the pattern is clear:

Founders who communicate clearly win attention.
Your stage, traction, or experience matters less than clarity.
Nervousness or imperfections don’t disqualify you; confusion does.

In short, most founders don’t have a pitch problem-they have a clarity problem. And a 30-second pitch exposes it immediately.

A Simple 30-Second Pitch Formula by Steve Walsh in his post.

Here’s a framework that works for founders at any stage:

Who you help – “We help ___”
The problem – “Who struggle with ___”
What you do – “By providing ___”
Why it matters – “This matters because ___”

If you can’t explain your venture this simply, a longer pitch won’t help-you need more clarity, not more time.

Your Next Step

Record a 30-second pitch in one take. Don’t overthink it. Don’t edit it. Then share it with me on instagram at @build_africa_ventures

The more you practice this, the sharper your communication becomes-and the better you’ll connect with investors, partners, and customers.

Remember: your first 30 seconds are your best chance to grab attention. Make them count.
